Updated prognostic index for renal cell carcinoma brain metastases shows longer survival in contemporary era

Retrospective · Lancet Oncol · 2026-11-06. Number 1 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for November 6, 2026.

In a 21-institution cohort of 1049 patients with newly diagnosed RCC brain metastases (2016-2022), median overall survival was 20.0 months, roughly double the 9.6 and 12.0 months seen in legacy cohorts from 1985-2015; an updated Renal GPA incorporated performance status, albumin, number of brain metastases, and extracranial disease.

Why it matters: Provides a contemporary, multi-institution benchmark and updated prognostic tool for counseling and trial stratification in RCC patients with brain metastases.

Limitation: Retrospective, multi-institutional data pooling with potential heterogeneity in treatment and follow-up across 21 centers.
