Suction ureteral access sheaths linked to better stone clearance and fewer infections in RIRS

Meta-analysis · World J Urol · 2026-11-06. Number 2 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for November 6, 2026.

A meta-analysis of 29 studies (4 randomized, 5604 patients) found suction sheaths reduced residual fragments at early and late follow-up and lowered fever and sepsis rates compared with traditional sheaths, with a possible added benefit from flexible-tip designs.

Why it matters: Adds support for suction-assisted sheaths as a strategy to improve stone clearance and reduce infectious complications in RIRS, though confirmation from randomized trials is needed.

Limitation: Only 4 of 29 studies were randomized; substantial heterogeneity, and effect on severe complications remains very uncertain.
