Nearly half of retractile testes ascend or need orchiopexy by age 7 in cohort study

Prospective · J Urol · 2026-11-04. Number 2 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for November 4, 2026.

In a prospective single-institution cohort of 237 boys with retractile testicle(s) followed to median 7 years, cumulative incidence of testicular ascent was 47% and of orchiopexy was 57% by 84 months, with lower BMI and right-sided laterality associated with ascent.

Why it matters: Suggests boys with retractile testes warrant longer-term surveillance by a pediatric urologist rather than single-visit reassurance.

Limitation: Single-institution design and only 69% of boys had documented exams at well-child visits, which may affect detection timing.
