Contaminated urine cultures, but not mixed skin flora, linked to post-op UTI risk

Retrospective · J Urol · 2026-11-04. Number 4 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for November 4, 2026.

In a retrospective review of over 10,000 endoscopic urologic procedures, preoperative urine cultures with at least one nondominant uropathogen (contaminated) were independently associated with postoperative UTI and 90-day mortality, while cultures classified as mixed urogenital skin flora were not.

Why it matters: Raises the question of whether mixed-flora culture classifications ought to distinguish true uropathogen contamination, warranting prospective validation.

Limitation: Retrospective, single multi-hospital system, ICD-10-coded outcome definition, hypothesis generating only.
