UNOS data show similar kidney transplant survival in prune belly syndrome versus matched controls

Retrospective · Urology · 2026-10-30. Number 5 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for November 3, 2026.

In a propensity-matched UNOS registry analysis of 269 prune belly syndrome kidney transplant recipients versus 1,076 controls, 10-year graft and patient survival did not differ significantly, though confidence intervals were wide.

Why it matters: Raises the question of whether prune belly syndrome patients can be evaluated for transplant similarly to other candidates, but registry data cannot capture all anatomic or functional nuances of this rare condition.

Limitation: Registry data with wide confidence intervals that do not exclude a modest survival difference, particularly at longer follow-up.
