SEER analysis estimates years of life lost by local treatment in intermediate-risk prostate cancer

Retrospective · World J Urol · 2026-10-31. Number 5 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for November 1, 2026.

In a SEER cohort of 220,113 men with intermediate-risk prostate cancer, years of life lost after radical prostatectomy or radiotherapy were compared with population controls; untreated men showed a 0.21-year disadvantage overall, worsening in younger or unfavorable-risk subgroups.

Why it matters: Hypothesis generating only. Results differ by age and treatment subgroup, so read the abstract before drawing conclusions about radical prostatectomy versus radiotherapy; SEER cannot capture comorbidity, treatment selection or quality of life.

Limitation: Retrospective SEER registry data subject to treatment selection bias; cannot adjust for comorbidity or shared decision-making factors.
