Meta-analysis: urethroplasty for post-BPH surgery bulbomembranous strictures shows 90% pooled patency

Meta-analysis · BJU Int · 2026-11-01. Number 3 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for November 1, 2026.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 417 patients from 9 observational studies found an overall pooled patency rate of 90% for urethroplasty after bulbomembranous strictures following BPH surgery, with patency around 87-94% depending on technique, though definitions of patency and continence varied widely.

Why it matters: Provides pooled benchmark patency rates for a challenging post-BPH stricture population, though heterogeneous outcome definitions and moderate-to-serious risk of bias limit certainty.

Limitation: All included studies were retrospective or prospective observational cohorts with moderate-to-serious risk of bias and heterogeneous outcome definitions.
