Bipolar enucleation noninferior to TURP for 12-month symptom relief in RCT

RCT · Eur Urol Focus · 2026-10-24. Number 4 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for October 24, 2026.

In an 84-patient two-center RCT, median 12-month IPSS was 5 in both bipolar enucleation (BipolEP) and TURP arms, meeting the noninferiority margin. BipolEP removed more tissue but had more early low-grade complications, while severe complications occurred only after TURP.

Why it matters: Supports BipolEP as an alternative to TURP for moderate-sized prostates with comparable symptom outcomes at one year.

Limitation: Only 79% included in per-protocol primary analysis; follow-up limited to 12 months.
