No difference in complication or readmission rates by PA versus NP staffing after radical prostatectomy
Retrospective · JU Open Plus · 2026-10-23. Number 5 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for October 23, 2026.
In a Medicare 20% sample of 8,975 men undergoing radical prostatectomy across 424 urology groups, postoperative complications, prolonged length of stay, and 90-day readmission did not differ significantly between practices staffed with PAs only, NPs only, or both.
Why it matters: Raises the question of whether PA and NP staffing models can be considered interchangeable for this operation, though this is hypothesis generating from Medicare claims data that lack clinical granularity.
Limitation: Retrospective Medicare claims analysis; claims data lack clinical detail such as individual provider experience or scope of practice.
