Meta-analysis finds no significant survival difference for bladder-sparing vs early cystectomy in cT1 micropapillary cancer

Meta-analysis · Eur Urol Oncol · 2026-10-21. Number 3 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for October 21, 2026.

Pooled data from 9 retrospective studies (1033 micropapillary cases) showed no statistically significant difference in cancer-specific survival between bladder-sparing approaches (mostly BCG) and early radical cystectomy for cT1 micropapillary urothelial carcinoma.

Why it matters: Raises the question of whether selected cT1 micropapillary patients could be managed with bladder-sparing therapy, but retrospective pooling limits causal inference.

Limitation: All included studies retrospective, with selection bias likely influencing which patients received bladder-sparing therapy.
