Augmentation cystoplasty shows durable urodynamic benefit over median 19 years in spinal cord injury

Retrospective · BJU Int · 2026-10-10. Number 2 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for October 11, 2026.

In a retrospective cohort of 70 patients with spinal cord injury and refractory neurogenic bladder dysfunction, augmentation cystoplasty increased mean bladder capacity from 155 to 490 mL and reduced detrusor pressure from 72 to 19 cmH2O, with continence achieved in 67% over a mean 19-year follow-up; complications included urolithiasis (10%) and malignancy (4%).

Why it matters: Provides long-term reassurance on durability and complication rates for augmentation cystoplasty in a population with limited surgical alternatives.
