Novel sulfonic acid stent coating cuts encrustation and symptoms in randomized trial
RCT · BJU Int · 2026-10-10. Number 1 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for October 10, 2026.
In a randomized trial of 100 patients with urolithiasis requiring ureteric stenting, a sulfonic acid-coated stent reduced mean encrustation weight by about 50% and lowered need for antimicrobial therapy (7.1% vs 31.8%) compared with standard stents, with improved stent symptom questionnaire scores.
Why it matters: A simple coating modification could meaningfully reduce stent-related morbidity and infection risk, a common source of patient complaints after stone surgery.
