Radical cystectomy with urinary diversion linked to higher fracture risk, especially in women

Retrospective · BJU Int · 2026-10-09. Number 2 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for October 9, 2026.

A Swedish registry study of 2908 cystectomy patients and 13,669 matched referents found higher fracture risk after cystectomy with urinary diversion, most pronounced in women (HR 2.06 for any fracture), without a corresponding increase in bone-protective drug initiation.

Why it matters: Suggests bone health should be proactively addressed in bladder cancer survivors after cystectomy, particularly women.
