Contrast-enhanced ultrasound guidance beats fluoroscopy for PCNL renal access

RCT · Eur Urol Focus · 2026-10-02. Number 5 in the UrologyWatch Top 5 for October 3, 2026.

In a 150-patient randomized trial, dual contrast-enhanced ultrasound guidance achieved higher first-attempt puncture success, faster tract establishment, shorter hospital stay, and less blood loss than fluoroscopy during PCNL, with similar complication rates.

Why it matters: Offers a radiation-free alternative for renal access during PCNL with potentially better efficiency and safety.
